 General Information

Nature and well-being
“Le Macchie Alte” is an organic estate of 420 hectares (a little over 1,000 acres) in which we farm olives, cereals and forage and we rear Maremman Cattle, Cinta Senese pigs, boars, rabbits, chicken and bees. Immersed in the quietness of the hills, in the shadow of a great oak you’ll find a lovely swimming pool where you can relax and take a refreshing dip. If you want to see the countryside, “Le Macchie Alte” is a wildlife reserve which you can explore on foot, on horseback or on mountain bike, meeting hares, pheasants, squirrels, buzzards and sometime even the wild boar along the way!
When you come to “Le Macchie Alte” you’ll find that getting away from it all is not so very far away.

The old farmhouses
There are three stone farmhouses: one dates from the sixteenth century and the other two from the nineteenth century. They have all been restored with the greatest respect for the traditional architecture of rural Maremma. There are twelve pretty guest rooms in all, each with its own bathroom.
Out of choice, there is no television here. Instead we have a beautiful room with fireplace in which you’ll find a range of table games to play with your friends or those you’ll meet here. Sometimes we really do need tranquillity and a quiet chat to recover our balance.

Our kitchen
Here you’ll have dinner in the veranda on large wooden tables…. as you can imagine there is a fantastic view over the hills. Our cooks have a lifetime of experience in preparing traditional Maremman recipes. We just give them what we grow organically and the miracles are their department. Such as: acquacotta, homemade spaghetti with agliata (garlic) sauce, wild boar stew, all served with an authentic Morellino di Scansano wine.

Our surroundings
Four kilometres from Le Macchie Alte is Montemerano, famous for its perfectly preserved mediaeval centre. Two kilometres to the South, Manciano is a typical small town of rural Tuscany, with a full range of services and a splendid fifteenth century stronghold to visit. Twenty minutes away by car are the archaeological sites of Sovana, Sorano and Pitigliano. The beaches of the Argentario or Lake Bolsena are not much further afield.
But if you come here, you cannot afford to miss the Thermal Baths of Saturnia where Cicero bathed - and you know how much the Romans appreciated the good things in life. The place is as glorious as ever and a dip in its warm waters (37°) at any time of year is a pleasure all must enjoy at least once. (We have a convention with the thermal baths and can provide specially discounted entrance tickets. And, if you book fifteen days in advance, this convention will also allow you to purchase low price health and beauty treatments at the Hotel Terme di Saturnia.)

Our products
To live well, one needs a good home and to eat well and wisely. Here the Maremman Cattle, the Cinta Senese pigs, the game and the poultry all live extremely well. This is guaranteed by AIAB (Italian Association of Organic Farming), which in 1997 certified as Organic the entire estate and its products. Extra virgin olive oil, woodland flower honey, Maremman beef and Cinta Senese pork, sauces, homemade jams and pastes for starters. …enjoy them!
