We want you to know the “ secrets of ponticelli “ because the place that we are going to descibe to you for the moment in a virtual way is unique and we hope you can enjoy its flavours completely;
Let’s begin with some history......... In the year 2000 the descendants of the owners decided to restructure the house in an “ orginal “ way, in the true sense of term, that is remaining as much as possible faithful to the building rules of rural Touscan houses and their outbuildings
There is a date in a stone of the house that has been left wehere it can easily be seen which is 1858 but Ponticelli could be older.
We certainly know that from the beginning of the XX century the house was used as a hayloft- that is the place where they put the dried grass ( hay ) which would be used as forage for animals- and a cellar- the place where the grapes picked in the fileds were thrown from the bins into a big vat and where they were trodden from local women , giving life to one of the most characteristic and amusing scene of peasant life .
Curiositiy about stones........
In the building of Ponticelli stones cut with hands from the famous quarry of Poggio colla had been certainly used. The quarry was active until 60 years ago and it is part of the Etruscan acropolis that some american universities, which do their stages every year in july just in the fields near the lake, have been studying since 1995.
Wood is another precious material of which we can talk about a little now, especially about the history of wood used for some solutions within the house. Actually, it comes form the vat that was used to make wine, the famous wine of San Pier Maggiore or Pimaggiore.The beans and the doors and windows frames are made of chestnut wood worked by one of the few craftsmen of the neighbourhhood and treated by hands with wax of bees.
